Best Casual Dining Spots on the Outer Banks

In the Outer Banks, you’ll never be short of beautiful places to see, adventurous things to do, and, perhaps most importantly, family-friendly spots to grab a good meal. When vacationing with the whole family, you want casual dining that is both affordable and welcoming.

Below are three Outer Banks restaurants that have it all for the traveling family.

Tortugas’ Lie

Location: 3016 S. Virginia Dare Tr., Nags Head, NC

It’s all about the Caribbean-influenced sandwiches at Tortugas’ Lie. One of the most popular sandwiches is the Big Wave Dave, a pineapple-dipped chicken breast sandwich with Swiss cheese.

The Big Lie – smoked turkey, bacon, and a slab of cheese – is another favorite. Substitute turkey for a fresh, seasonal catch upon availability. A number of menu items rotate seasonally, like the crab cake sandwich, as they use exclusively fresh, local ingredients.

This low-key dining spot is a nice mix of casual sandwiches, fresh local seafood and affordable sushi – though the latter is served only on Wednesday nights during the off-season.

The restaurant caters to all dietary preferences. The garden burger, made with a bean-based patty, is doused in honey habanero BBQ sauce and topped with mixed greens – perfect for vegetarians. The bean and rice burrito is another great vegetarian option – vegans, hold the cheese – and comes with BBQ sauce, beans, rice, and peppers stuffed into a fresh wrap.

A family-friendly restaurant, they have a kids’ menu bound to keep the little ones happy. You’ll find some at-home favorites, such as grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chicken tenders, and pasta.

Tortugas’ Lie is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. (10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday). Reservations are not required, and wait time is typically minimal. Call the restaurant at (252) 441-7299 for details.

Kill Devil Grill

Location: 2008 S. Virginia Dare Tr., Kill Devil Hills, NC

With homemade soup, fresh daily catches, and a whole lot of barbeque sauce, Kill Devil Grill is a traditional American bar and grill with a coastal flair.

One iconic dish is the local wahoo, typically topped with corn salsa and black beans. The all-American menu has other favorites, such as pastas, fish sandwiches, and a classic roadhouse chili.

Kill Devil Grill is unique in that its listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a 1939 Pullman diner car. It has a cozy, old-school ambiance with rustic furnishings and vintage art.

Kill Devil Grill is open Tuesday through Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. The restaurant is closed Sunday and Monday. Call (252) 449-8181 for information.

Blue Moon Beach Grill

Location: 4104 S. Virginia Dare Tr. #16, Nags Head, NC

Ocean-inspired Blue Moon Beach Grill infuses a rich nautical theme into every aspect of both the atmosphere and the menu. This is southern-style seafood eating at its finest – and simplest.

The menu includes sea scallops, oysters Rockefeller, fried calamari, mussels, and other seafood choices. For those opting for “turf,” chargrilled wings, pulled pork, and the classic Beach Burger – a 1/3 pound of Prime Angus beef – are popular plates.

The casual restaurant offers some fun and fresh specials each week, including buffalo tuna bites, stuffed peppers, blackened salmon salad, and their Pickled Fried Chicken Sandwich, among others.

One of the best family-friendly Outer Banks restaurants, you’re guaranteed to get high-quality seafood here. A back nautical dining area is perfect for sitting down and enjoying the ambiance.

Blue Moon is open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
