Description ↑↓

This cute, well equipped, modernized Old Nags Head cottage is in such a private location that you might not even be able to find it with GPS! The location features an extremely rare, private (shared with a couple of other properties), sandy sound-front beach that is perfect for all kinds of water sport activities. Swimming, fishing, kayaking, windsurfing, kite-boarding - you name it! Parents will be the envy of their friends because your children will absolutely love the warm, calm, shallow, clear sound waters when the ocean is cold and rough or red-flagged as dangerous, or even when the ocean is fine. The sound is a wonderful playground of its own. Tuttle-Chesson epitomizes Old Nags Head style cottage charm but it has all the modern conveniences, appliances, equipment and furnishings. Covered porches on all 4 sides provide a shady spot to enjoy the breeze no matter which direction the sun is shining!

Cute “granny cottage”

The cottage is just like one you would have stayed in as a kid in the 70s – highly nostalgic and cozy. The seating and beds indoors were plentiful, if not comfortable. The rocking chairs and hammock on the porch where outstanding. The weeds were doing their best to overtake the porch although the family members a few doors down were doing a great job keeping the lawn mowed and pulling back the brush. As far as amenities – we brought our own sheets, towels, tp, tissues, wash cloths, sponges and cleaning supplies in addition to hand soap and of course shower supplies. There is an overgrown path across from the driveway that leads to a tiny beach with some cute benches and another hammock – which looked cozy. The bugs were biting and the sea grass was accumulated on the little patch of beach so we decided to not spend time down there. Plus, the neighbor’s dogs run loose and they didn’t much like our dog being over there. The neighbor was friendly and kind – and so were the dogs except for the fact that they preferred to show their dismay with our dog by pooping in our driveway every day. Also, what a surprise to learn that the garbage pickup occurs about 330 AM!! construction starts at 7 and the recycle pick up is early as well. While it’s quiet most of the day, it’s just a little jarring during traditional sleeping hours. Overall a nice place to visit on the Outer Banks.
Great Location

The location of the property was great. We loved the porch. A few things we were not pleased with was the driveway parking. It needed to be cut back more. There were 2 cooking sheets in the oven from where someone cooked bacon. Some of the dishes were not cleaned all the way. We had to wash what we used before cooking in it.
Excellent

The young housekeeper was very patient with us , we had a slow start this morning , but she even took photos of me an my significant other in front of the house and cracked a few jokes, Could not complain at all! Thanks! Will definitely be back an recommend to others!

Not Great, Even for Low Price

The property is located in a strange area of the sound. Everything is marked private-do not enter. Not very welcoming from the start. The house itself is very nostalgic, if I’m being kind. We probably could’ve gotten over it’s poor condition if the beds were halfway decent. They were not. Although the mattresses looked new, they were the thinnest mattresses I’ve ever seen, even compared to a sofa bed. We had to go buy a $100 foam topper just to be able to sleep. The place should come with a warning, just for this fact alone. Hmmm…what else…we love dogs-we have a few-but the neighbors just let their dogs walk around as they wish. Loose dogs. Not a huge deal, but, again, you’re surrounded by people who think it okay to just let their dogs wander about. Not entirely considerate IMHO. What else? We got sprayed with poison one night as the local bug spray truck drove by. That was a special treat. Lol. Positives? Allows dogs. Close to the sound (although the ‘private beach’ isn’t great). Only 1/2 mile from the Jockey’s Ridge Soundside park-one of our faves. Nice for biking, waking, running. Outdoor shower was the bomb. We didn’t even use the indoor one. A/C worked well. And, you’re at the beach, so any rental there is great for that fact alone. I’d probably give the rental a solid 3, perhaps even a 4, if the owners thought enough of their guests to get decent mattresses. Overall, we’ve stayed for years around Nags Head/KDH, both on the beachside and Soundside. I’d recommend paying the extra $500 to get a much nicer rental. Oh! And other positive is that interacting with Cola Vaughan was really great. We didn’t even complain during our stay because it is what it is, but all interactions were on point and friendly. We’d rent from them again-just not this house.
Manager Response
Hi Jen, thank you so much for your feedback. The homeowner appreciates your review and has replaced both queen mattresses in 2022. They also installed a new dishwasher this year. Please note that the Town of Nags Head employs a bug spray truck seasonally throughout the town, not just this particular neighborhood. Although rare, we agree that it is not particularly pleasant when you are caught outside as they go by! We would also like to encourage our Tuttle Chesson guests to report unleashed pets to the Town, as we have done in the past. Unfortunately, many of the homeowners in this beautiful neighborhood have experienced intentional trespassing on their private property, hence the private property signs. Thank you again for your review, we are glad to hear that you enjoyed some of the amenities despite the rustic quality of Tuttle Chesson not really suiting your group. We hope to host you in another CVR property soon!
