The Cork is a nicely furnished, well-equipped 4 bedroom cottage ideal for a family who wants to be really close to the beach without those high oceanfront rates! South Nags Head is a great location for a true beach vacation. It is completely residential and very quiet, but most essential goods and services are located only about a mile north of The Cork at Whalebone Junction. This includes a small supermarket, a 7-11 store, a service station, several excellent restaurants and a wide variety of shops at the Tanger Outlet Mall. The spectacular new North Carolina Aquarium Complex at Jennette's Pier is also only a mile north of The Cork and the very popular Outer Banks Fishing Pier/ Fish Heads Bar and Grill is a mile south. Bodie Island lighthouse, the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore are only minutes away. A short drive takes you to Roanoke Island and all its attractions including the N.C. Aquarium, Festival Park with its replica of the good ship Elizabeth II, the Lost Colony outdoor drama and Fort Raleigh National Historical Site. You can see, hear and smell the ocean from the house and it's just a few steps away. South Nags Head features a five mile long multi-purpose "super-sidewalk" where vacationers can bike, jog, or just walk---safely away from traffic. Inside, you'll find all stainless steel appliances in the kitchen, a comfortable living room, and an upper level den with ocean views. There are also many other pleasant places to sit and read or chat including 3 decks facing both East and West so you can catch the sunrise or the sunset; some rays or some shade. It's all up to you once you pop The Cork!

This is our second year in a row renting here based solely on location (feet away from the beach) and the ability to bring our dogs. I concur with Kat’s review about the cons, but would add that some of the furniture is worn and needs to be replaced. I would also suggest that the owners think about getting bar height chairs for the deck so you can see over the railing.

Pros
– Proximity to the beach for price is fantastic.
-Awesome views
-Lovely old style architecture, tastefully decorated with lovely art, tile floors in kitchen and lower bath
-Well stocked kitchen with great storage space for food, etc.
– Location is ideal, close enough to grocery restaurant etc, far enough for wide beaches and less people
-Good construction meant less, shaking and noise with movement. Except the one king room which has and open ceiling so it gets a bit of sound from downstairs.
-We had an issue with the outdoor shower knobs not working and they were repaired within 36 hours.
Cons( for us)
-Could use a good deep clean
-Upstairs high ceilings, while attractive, require window units and are hard to cool on hotter days.
– Main floor bathroom is located through a bedroom, also where laundry is located.
– Ground Level fits 2 cars easily, 3-4 very tight and no room to socialize/play and little room store beach stuff ( though there is an open yard area behind with a fig tree with fruit ripe late summer)
Overall we had a great week!
