Any Season is a Great Time to Visit the Outer Banks

When is the Best Time to Visit the Outer Banks?

A lot of people ask us, “when is the best time to visit the Outer Banks?” Our answer is “any time!” The Gulf stream moderates temperatures along the North Carolina shore year-round, making the climate cooler than most of the southeast during the summer and warmer in winter.

This doesn’t mean that every day has perfect weather, of course. We get our share of rain and even the occasional snow flurry. But it does mean that you can enjoy a variety of activities along our shores whether you visit us in July or December, whether you bring your picnic basket or your parka. With that in mind, here’s a look at what you can expect in the Outer Banks during each of the four seasons.

Activities on Outer Banks

Spring

Temps are generally in the 60s-70s, especially after mid-April. The water warms up as well, making springtime perfect for a bracing swim in the ocean. The season is also ideal for dipping your hook in local waterways. You may just snag a prize catch! You can also enjoy our many wonderful restaurants, shops, and other attractions. After the sun goes down you may feel a bit of a chill, but nothing that a crackling campfire and a warm beverage won’t fix.

Summer

This is the busy time of year along the Outer Banks. The beaches, piers, and other sites are open for business, many of them 24 hours a day. Daytime temps are usually in the low 80s, making summer the perfect time to enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities. You can surf, swim, fish, shop, dance, and dine to your heart’s content. Or just relax along the sandy beaches with a good book and let the sun’s gentle rays melt your cares away.

Autumn

Many say that this is the best time of year to visit the Outer Banks. We think they may have a point. Crowds taper off and temps become milder. Winds pick up, making fall perfect for activities like kiteboarding, wind surfing, and parasailing.  Highs are usually in the 70s while lows hover in the high 50s-low 60s at night. The colors of the season are rich and warm, making autumn as scenic as it is splendid.

Winter

What can you do during winter in the Outer Banks? Here are a few activities we suggest:

  • Walk the beaches and look for seashells.
  • Dine in our restaurants and savor the joy of not needing reservations.
  • Browse local shops and take home a one-of-a-kind treasure that’s both priceless and affordable.
  • Cozy up under a blanket and turn your gaze skyward to enjoy a star-studded night.
  • Make friends with tranquility and reacquaint yourself with a loved one – or with yourself.
