Little Known Outer Banks Surfing Spots

The Outer Banks are famous for heart-stirring natural beauty, amazing food, and rich historical heritage. But did you know that the North Carolina shore is also one of the best places in the world to go surfing? It’s true. In fact, surfers across the globe flock to the area to test their skills in this scenic paradise. In this post were going to look at the best surfing spots along the banks. Each has its own unique charms, yet all of them will give you an experience that’s both challenging and exhilarating.

Surfing the Outer Banks

Corolla/Carova – this is a great spot for beginning to moderately skilled surfers. The area just off Corolla has well-developed sandbars that keep the waves relatively modest, while Carova offers higher swells for a more intense outing. The beaches in this part of the Outer Banks are often less crowded than in more northerly destinations.

Nags Head – the area just off Jeanette’s Pier is known the world over as one of the best all-around surfing locations you’ll find anywhere. Surfers have been coming out here since World War II. But virtually any beach in this region can offer some amazing waves if you keep your eyes open.

Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills – warning: the waves in this area can really test your skills. This is partially due to their ferocity but also due to pier pilings that seem to pop out of nowhere. Still, the waves make the hazards worth the risk, especially after a storm has kicked things up a notch.

Duck Pier – this is a popular spot, not only with surfers but other visitors to the area, so be prepared for good-sized crowds both during the summer and spring/autumn. The surf is great and you’ll find plenty of on-shore recreational opportunities as well.

Hatteras – this is a favorite spot for local surfing competitions, especially in the area around the old (no longer standing) lighthouse. Novice surfers should try the area just off the four-wheel-drive-approved beaches near Frisco. A pronounced sandbar creates modestly sized waves that are perfect for a newbie looking to get her feet wet.

Ocracoke Island – the waves here are particularly aggressive, breaking just offshore and providing an adrenaline-pumping experience for even the most seasoned surfer. On the other hand, there is a wonderful spot about two miles south of Ocracoke Village where lifeguards stand guard, making the area a good choice for beginners to test their skills. Comfort stations with showers and restrooms are available to clean yourself up after riding the waves.

Avon Pier – this spot is a favorite destination for the local surfing community. If you’re looking for a great all-around place to launch out into the Atlantic, then you won’t go wrong here.

Buxton – this area rivals Avon Pier in terms of popularity. Check out the local lighthouse while you’re catching a few waves.

The S-Curves – we saved the best for last. You simply must give the waves in this area a try. On bad days they’re good; on good days they’re unbeatable. Expect to see plenty of people, especially during summertime. But don’t let it get you down. The experience is worth bumping elbows with a few tourists.
