Ocracoke Island

Three Ways to Get to Ocracoke Island

  1. The Hatteras ferry. This is the shortest ferry ride at approximately 45 minutes each way. However, the drive down Highway 12 from Nags head to the dock takes about two hours, so figure this into your plans. The ferry runs every 30 minutes during the summer and hourly during the off-season. The arrival point on Ocracoke island is served by modern paved roads that will take you anywhere you want to go. Cost is free. This is an extremely popular ferry ride, so make reservations early and arrive ahead of time.
  2. The Cedar Island ferry. The trip to Ocracoke Island from this station is a little over two hours long. This ferry runs six or seven times during the summer and perhaps three times a day during the rest of the year. Costs vary between $10-$20 depending on vehicle size and weight. The arrival spot on the island is very close to shops, dining venues, and other attractions.
  3. The Swan Quarter ferry. The mainland departure point is located in an isolated part of the coast. Trip length is approximately 2 1/2 hours and takes visitors to a well-equipped port with restrooms and vending machines. Fees vary depending on the type of vehicle you’re driving, but are usually around $15.
