Halloween on the Outer Banks

Halloween on the Outer Banks is a fun time on a beautiful strip of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina. This iconic vacation destination is commonly visited during the summer season, but has much more to offer year-round and in the fall, with great deals on Outer Banks vacation rentals.

The Halloween season brings Halloweek on the Outer Banks, which is a week-long celebration of all the best parts of this nationally recognized holiday. Film festivals, parades, and family-friendly things to do abound on the Outer Banks. Finding activities for all ages around Halloween as well as events for adults is easy when staying here.

Halloween Parade

An exciting family-friendly event is the Outer Banks Halloween Parade. Everyone dresses up in their costumes and marches down the street during this event. This is a free event that includes live entertainment, special guests, trick-or-treating opportunities, and a costume contest.

Many families come out to celebrate Halloween on this beautiful island, marching down the road and enjoying all the events of the parade. Make sure to get there early to get a good spot in line, and smile at the judges as you pass. Pick a unique costume or choose a theme for the whole family in this fun event.

This year the Halloween Parade will start at Kelly’s in Nags Head on Sunday October 29th. There is a pre-parade kickoff event at 2:00 p.m. and the parade starts at 3:00 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony for the best costumes of the parade. Dress up with your family and don’t miss this fun Halloween parade!

Halloween International Film Festival

Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks offers a Halloween film festival which will be held on October 26-28 for a variety of filmmakers from around the world. Kill Devil Hills hosts this festival that features independent films of all different genres. The festival includes screenings of select films, as well as a killer after-party.

Meet and greets, Q&A’s, photo opportunities, and special Halloween announcements happen after the movies are viewed. While all genres are welcome, many people stick to the theme of the season and feature their up-and-coming horror projects. Movie fans, especially fans of the horror genre, should make sure to catch this exciting chance to view unique screenings.

Ghost Tours of the OBX

This is not for the faint of heart. This is a serious scare for hardcore horror junkies. Learn about various legends and horror stories on the Outer Banks while going on ghost tours, including 117 people who disappeared mysteriously over 400 years ago, never to be heard from again, or the captain who still haunts the area where he was born.

Hear tales of those who disappeared here. Hear the stories of the ghostly dancers. Do those who disappeared centuries ago still lurk in the woods? What took them? That’s all part of the fun mystery.  These tours last 90 minutes and have frequent stops throughout the way.

Let the mystery of the island envelope and entrance you. Tours are held every Wednesday night throughout October, with the tours starting at dark. Adults are $13 per person and children under 10 are $8 each. Reservations are required. Call the ticket office at 252.573.1450.

Draped In Black

This is an evening lantern tour that reenacts the Victorian mourning process. The home of a grieving widow is opened up to tours, where people experience the strange ways we used to mourn our loved ones.

Move through a graveyard from the 1800’s, where anyone could pop up at any moment. Tour around Island Farms to hear stories of the past residents of the farm and view the costumed actors that play the parts all too well. This event starts a bit after Halloween on November 3rd.
